N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) was a revolutionary American hip-hop group formed in Compton, California, in 1987, pivotal in defining the gangsta rap subgenre. Featuring iconic members like Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube, their music boldly confronted institutional racism and police brutality, making inherently political statements through raw, explicit lyrics. Despite facing widespread controversy and being banned from mainstream radio for their content, they achieved massive commercial success, selling over ten million units in the U.S.

Their seminal debut album, Straight Outta Compton (1989), and the follow-up Niggaz4Life (1991)—which was the first hardcore rap album to hit number one on the Billboard 200—solidified their place in music history. Active from 1987 to 1991, N.W.A left an indelible mark on hip-hop, shaping its lyrical and musical evolution and broadening its appeal. Their lasting influence was recognized with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
